General Description

The Conduct Member Advisor is the primary resource for members involved in conduct proceedings at the central-level. There are two Conduct Member Advisors. The two Conduct Member Advisors will split the conduct hearing cases. They provide assistance and information to both the complainant and respondent involved in conduct cases to ensure they understand the process and can appropriately prepare and effectively participate in the grievance process. They also act as the primary resource for members and unit-level managers involved in review hearings and/or personnel-related matters.

The Conduct Member Advisor is obliged to attend all assigned Conduct Committee (ConCom) meetings, screening meetings, and to assist members in preparing for and/or participating in hearings that come before the committee, as well as in any potential appeals of those decisions. The Conduct Member Advisor will also serve as a resource to the membership, being available via office hours, phone, and email to answer conduct-related questions and provide guidance on BSC conduct policies and grievance procedures.

The Conduct Member Advisors will also work in conjunction with the Conduct Hearing Coordinator, Conduct Committee Chairs, and Member Resources Supervisor to develop and disseminate educational materials related to conduct issues and conflict resolution at the unit-level.

Conduct Member Advisor Specific Duties

1. Publicize the Conduct Member Advisor’s services to the general membership.
a. Post fliers at the Central Office and at each Unit.
b. Make announcements at New Member Orientations, and House-Level Manager trainings, at the beginning of each semester.
c. Make a personal cell phone number available to the general membership.
2. Consult with and support members.
a. Hold consistent drop-in hours every week.
b. Meet with members when advice is requested or when a grievance is referred.
c. Provide advice to members, including interpretations of the BSC member contract, and the Conduct Code.
d. Provide members with all relevant BSC documents, policies, etc., at their request.
e. Be thoroughly familiar with relevant BSC documents such as the current BSC member contract, Administrative Code, Conduct Code, and unit-level managerial policies.
f. Refer issues that may not require ConCom adjudication to the appropriate central-level staff person for consideration of alternative dispute resolution options.
3. Assist members with conduct-related concerns at all levels.
a. Seek information and resources from Central Level supervisors and managers and work collaboratively to find appropriate solutions to conduct issues.
b. Meet with the Conduct Hearing Coordinator and the ConCom Chair to screen ConCom cases.
c. Assist the complainant in understanding their rights in the conduct process, compiling witness statements prior to the pre-hearing meeting, and understanding the grievance procedure and relevant policies in preparation for ConCom.
d. Assist the respondent in understanding their rights in the conduct process, collecting witness statements, and understanding the grievance procedure and relevant policies in preparation for ConCom.
e. Receive witness statements from both parties and, in the instance of harassment cases, remove all identifying information in advance of the pre-hearing and screening.
f. Provide updates to both the complaint and respondent regarding the process, as needed.
g. Attend all assigned ConCom meetings.
h. Support members at ConCom and ensure that the process is fair and that both the complainant’s and respondent’s perspectives and desired outcome are shared with the committee.
i. Represent members at ConCom in their absence.
j. Follow-up with the respondent after the hearing to ensure they understand the decision and their appeal rights.
k. Follow-up with the complainant after the hearing to check in and process the outcome with them.
l. Assist members in pursuing appeals of ConCom decisions in a timely and effective manner.
m. Attend all assigned ConCom Appeal screening meetings.
4. Assist unit-level leaders and members in review hearings and personnel-related matters
a. Assist unit-level leaders in preparing for and responding to removal hearings and/or appeals upon the request of the unit-level leader.
b. Assist member employees in requests brought before the Personnel Appeals Committee upon request of the member employee.
5. Miscellaneous
a. Maintain the confidentiality of all requests and issues, the parties’ identities, the investigation report, and any other information gathered while assisting members or in the course of preparing for a hearing and release the information to others only in accordance with BSC policies and procedures.
b. Take appropriate steps to protect digital information and written documents from accidental disclosure.
c. Maintain a thorough knowledge of BSC policies and procedures.
d. Meet with the Conduct Hearing Coordinator on a weekly basis.
e. Respond to emails and phone calls within 24 hours.
f. Create and maintain manuals, calendar, resource list, and exit documents on a semesterly basis to provide continuity for the next Conduct Member Advisor.
g. Maintain an understanding of BSC administrative policies/procedures and be willing to fill in for the Administrative Member Advisor in the event of unavailability or conflict of interest.
h. Other duties as assigned by the Cooperative Experience Manager and/or as dictated by BSC policy.
6. Assist the Conduct Hearing Coordinator with transcribing pre-hearing interviews.
7. Under the direction of the Conduct Hearing Coordinator, update educational resources for members related to conduct and conflict resolution.
8. Educate members on the Conduct Grievance Procedures, conduct policies, and conflict resolution mechanisms.

Skills/Knowledge Required for Job Performance

1. Strong organizational skills, including ability to balance multiple, competing priorities and requests under strict deadlines.
2. Experience conducting interviews and gathering facts about conflicts and/or personal issues.
3. Experience handling sensitive and confidential information.
4. Excellent oral advocacy skills.
5. Thorough knowledge of BSC Member Contract and conduct policies and procedures.
6. Understanding of and demonstrated ability to maintain strong professional boundaries when contacted about a pending or completed conflicts and/or investigations.
7. Must attend Title IX and/or other appropriate trainings as determined by the Conduct Hearing Coordinator.

Term of Job: Available by semester in Fall, Spring, Summer
