JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Central Office Receptionists serve as the first point of contact for co-op members and the general public, addressing inquiries, resolving issues, verifying payments, and managing housing applications. This role involves frequent interaction with the public, both in person and over the phone, as well as a variety of clerical tasks including paperwork and data entry.

Key duties include:

• Answering and directing phone calls
• Greeting and assisting visitors at the front counter
• Opening and closing the office, and managing incoming and outgoing mail
• Verifying registration fee payments for applicants and confirming payment completion for housing contracts
• Verifying membership eligibilities and assisting applicants with eligibility-related questions
• Assisting with housing assignments and maintaining waitlists and house lists for each unit
• Managing housing applications, processing contracts, and handling related email correspondence
• Supporting the Housing Department with data entry, filing, and general administrative tasks
• Receptionists play a key role in maintaining smooth office operations and ensuring a positive experience for all who contact or visit the office.

REQUIREMENTS:

This position demands patience, professionalism, and a courteous demeanor, with a genuine willingness to assist the public. Strong interpersonal skills are essential, as the role involves frequent interaction with members, applicants, and visitors.

Applicants must be available to work 15–20 hours per week, scheduled between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Additional qualifications include:

• Reliability, friendliness, and the ability to remain calm and composed in a fast-paced office environmen
• Accurate and efficient data entry skills
• Ability to type a minimum of 50 words per minute
• Quick learning ability and the capacity to follow directions
• At least 6 months of prior work experience, including some office-related duties
• Familiarity with the Berkeley Student Cooperative (BSC) is helpful but not required

To be eligible for this position, you must:

• Be a current BSC member and meet student eligibility requirements
• Not hold a unit-level manager position or serve on the Board of Directors while employed in this Central Level role

HOURS/CREDIT:

There are four receptionist positions in the housing department. Two positions are 10 hours/week, Fall, Spring and Summer. During the Fall and Spring, 5 hours are paid as a rent credit and the other 5 hours go toward the workshift requirement for members who live in the houses. During the Summer, all 10 hours are paid as a rent credit.

The other two positions work 15/20 hours per week depending on the semester. During the Fall, these receptionists work 15 hours per week and 10 of these hours are paid as a rent credit while the remaining 5 go towards the workshift requirement for members who live in the houses. During the Spring and summer, the hours increase to 20 per week. During the Spring, 15 hours are paid and 5 hours are applied towards workshift. During the Summer, all 20 hours are paid.

Members are compensated at the workshift rate which is $22/hour as of July 2025.
